Pick the Right Fabric

The two most important qualities to look for in fabric are weight and movement. If a fabric is too stiff, it can look boxy; too thin, and it may cling to every bulge. Wool crepe, wool microfiber blends, cotton or wool gabardine and cotton blended with silk are generally good choices.
Work with Proportion

Your clothes may fit properly, but if you don’t get the proportions right, you’ll still be off the mark. Choose looks that are either “short over long” or “long over short.” Think: a cropped jacket over a knee-length shift, or a long jacket with skinny pants, or a tunic over a shorter pencil skirt.
Invest in Quality Fabric

The adage “You get what you pay for” is gospel with fabric. Cheap fabrics tend to be less flattering, while higher-quality fabrics look better, last longer and hold their shape
Avoid Excessive Details

Too many can create a questionable overall look, date your clothes, minimize and outfit’s versatility and make your look heavier.
Confidence Is Key

Some of the most attractive people in the word are not always the most fashionably dressed, yet they radiate a self-assurance that gets them noticed. While you can quickly lose your poise if you’re not comfortable in what you’re wearing, the right clothes can lend you some of your attitude. The rest has to come from within.
Create a Signature Look

You can create a signature look that is bold or subtle, such as always wearing something lavender or a favorite stack of bangles. Repetition isn’t boring—it is the mark of a confident woman who knows what she likes and what suits her best.
Choose the Right Shade

Everyone can wear every color—it all comes down to finding the right shade of that color for you. The shades that suit you depend on your skin tone as well as the color of your hair and eyes. Don’t go overboard—stick to a maximum of three colors in any given outfit. Any more and the colors lose their punch.
Play Up Basics

A plain T-shirt lets an ornate skirt or jacket take center stage. If you choose a colored shirt, be sure to keep other pieces in complementary hues or neutrals.
Try a Trouser

The most sophisticated way to wear jeans to work is to pick a trouser cut in a dark rinse. Wear them with a jacket, a refined top or sweater, and heels or flats.
Wear Color Wisely

The best way to wear a colorful pair of jeans is to make them the standout piece in your ensemble. The rest of the outfit should be neutral and simple.
Keep Styles Simple for Maximum Versatility

Jeans can quickly go from day to night if you choose a style with clean lines and minimal details. Pair sexy, white skinny jeans with a feminine top that has some panache. Dressy heels with also ratchet up the wow factor.
Dress Up Pants

When it comes to dressing up a pair of pants, simpler shapes are often better. Sleek black pants or a pair with tuxedo stripes are evening-worthy options that can be worn in countless ways. Add shimmer and femininity with metallic, beaded or ruffled tops.
Try an Evening Coat

Choose an evening coat as you would a gown: You want one rich in detail and cut from luxe material so you feel gorgeous every time you slip it on.
Invest in a Chic Bag

Classic hangbags are worth their hefty price tags because you can carry them for years. You want your basic shades, but also try one in a bright color; if well crafted, a bag is ageless, timeless and fun.
Have Fun with Eyewear

Don’t worry about being practical or classic when it comes to sunglasses, because a quick way to update any look is to slip on the latest shades.
Get a Great Haircut

A great haircut is crucial; your hair is your constant accessory. Yes, good cuts can be expensive, but what they add to your overall appearance makes them worth every penny.
Build a Core Wardrobe

If you’re in your 20s and 30s, build a simple core wardrobe but also experiment and play with inexpensive, trend-driven items.
Invest in Quality Pieces

In your 40s and beyond, establish a lasting wardrobe of the best basics, investing in the highest quality you can afford. Play with your accessories, but also start to collect some real jewelry as well.
Find a Bra That Fits

A bra that fits you well will work harder than anything else in your wardrobe. Seek out a bra-fit expert at a lingerie boutique or department store for expert help in determining your exact size and which styles best fit your shape.
Add Seamless Styles to Your Repertoire

Seamless bras with some lining are great for formfitting T-shirts and other clingy tops, because their extra layers can enhance your bust, smooth out your curves, and keep your nipples from showing through. To make your seamless bras and panties as invisible as possible, choose a shade that matches your skin tone. One common mistake: white under white, which invariably shows through.
Embrace Shapewear

Everyday bras and panties are an obvious must, but you also need a core group of problem-solving pieces, such as seamless underwear and other shape wear. They’re your wardrobe’s secret weapons, the unseen times that let you pull on your slinky or low-cut dresses with total confidence. Of course, you deserve to own a few fun “little nothings” as well, perhaps to wear with little (or nothing) else.

Of my many flaws there’s one that really weighs me down. My hair. It’s flat, it’s lifeless, and I have no clue how to deal with the cowlick. Sometimes I gaze at women on the street with their perfect curls and marvel—why can’t I be like them? The rational observer might suggest I get a low-maintenance cut or simply put things in perspective. Unless she were completely vindictive, she would not conclude that my inability to style my hair meant I was a failure as a person.

But I might. While I pride myself on being kind to others, I do not show the same compassion to myself. Instead, I have a gift for letting trivial things suck me into a vortex of self-loathing. A missed workout, a bad piano practice: Anything can churn my mind into an emotional whirlpool that gathers strength by pulling in unrelated failings—say, my difficulty choosing clothes or my lack of a steady paycheck. “Why can’t I dress myself? Why did I pick this career?” Eventually, I’m dragged all the way under: “Why am I so pathetic?”
Of course I realize that such thinking is totally irrational, but that only makes me angrier; if I know my thoughts are silly, why can’t I stop them?
This self-directed anger, which is thought to be more common among women than men, was part of the reason I started cognitive behavioral therapy. CBT is based on the idea that our moods are caused largely by our interpretations of the world around us, and that these interpretations are not factual. In the world of CBT, if you want to change the way you feel, you have to change the way you think.
“You need to evaluate your judgments against yourself until clear thinking is as automatic as the hurtful patterns it’s meant to replace,” says the therapist who introduced me to the practice, Bruce Hubbard, PhD, a clinical psychologist in New York and director of the Cognitive Health Group.
One of CBT’s key techniques is called cogni-tive restructuring. It involves identifying a “hot thought”—an emotionally charged idea that breeds negativity—and putting it on trial, calling up evidence for and against your interpretation in order to recognize its flaws. “This helps you separate the facts about who you are from the negative spin you’ve placed on your experience,” says Hubbard. And defusing negative thoughts makes it less likely they’ll build to a bigger problem, like depression.
But CBT isn’t just about rewiring your thinking; it also includes finding ways to take positive action against perceived failures, and in some cases, developing a level of acceptance: Maybe I’ll never be cast in a Pantene ad, and maybe that’s okay.
I’m still not immune to my own attacks, but I’m better at disarming situations that trigger them. My hope is that, with practice, I’ll be able to take a step back and go easy on myself—cowlick and all.

Quick Healthy Weight Loss Doesn’t Have to Mean Abandoning Good Habits
You really can’t afford that fab ten day spa for losing ten pounds at a price tag of $3000 before the airline ticket. But the magic attracts you. Trying to lose weight can be so much work, home alone and on your own. With so many diets out there, what does one choose? If you are like most people, they have dieted to lose weight and are feeling very tired and run down. Others have found the weight loss so slow that they feel frustrated and discouraged. If it’s just a few extra pounds that you can’t seem to shake, what’s to be done? What we all want is a recipe for a fast healthy weight loss that can be maintained. A few surprisingly simple rules can make a difference. Here are the safest and best tips for quick healthy weight loss that won’t set you back a fortune or leave you zapped of energy and vitality.
Water and Hydration, A Key to Fast Weight Loss
Many people mistake hunger for thirst. Most people do not drink enough water. Drinking at least 20% of your body weight is a good rule of thumb. A person may be thirsty and think that they hunger so they eat instead of drinking water. They are taking extra calories that could be avoided. If someone is unsure whether they are hungry or thirsty, they can drink plenty of water first and see if there hunger goes away. Another way to satiate hunger is to drink plenty of water 1 hour before a meal. This way people make time to hydrate their bodies so when it is mealtime, they will eat for hunger only.
- Dare to start with a 3 to 5 day green juice fast
A juice fast or feast as it has been called can be the quickest way to give the body a break from having to digest food all day and a great way to reset your metabolism. Many people will start to lose weight on a juice fast. After the fast, a person will want to slowly add foods back into their diet. They can start with vegetables followed by fruits and nuts and then finally minimal meats and carbohydrates.
- Eat 4 to 5 small meals per day
When a person eats, several small meals per day. Your digestion is able to be more efficient and therefore improves your metabolism leading your body to fast healthy weight loss.
- Eat fresh and organic foods
Toxins love to bind to your fat cells. The less toxins a person has in their body the faster they will lose weight. Eating fresh foods and organic or natural foods greatly diminishes the toxins a person is taking in.
- Keep the vegetables coming
Vegetables are great. They contain lots of fiber and nutrients, are low in sugar, fat, and carbohydrates. A diet high in a variety of vegetables except potatoes and some squashes for their high starch content is a person’s best friends in their goal for quick healthy weight loss.
Raw foods contain lots of digestive enzymes and are packed with vitamins and minerals. Raw foods are nutrient dense and are untouched by cooking. Cooking does destroy many of the digestive enzymes and nutrients. You are likely to eat a lot less food when you eat raw because your body is getting much more nutrients in needs and you will feel less hungry. Raw foods also help detoxify your body so it will help you lose more fat cells that are protecting you from toxins. Eat plenty of raw.
Dairy and meats are difficult for the body to process and are slow to digest and easily help pack in the pounds. They also create allergic reactions for many people. Minimize consumption of meats can really give your digestion a break and help you shed off the pounds.
- Cut the carbohydrates, sugar, junk food, condiments, and processed foods
There are so many artificial ingredients in junk foods. Most the body does not recognize, sees them as toxins, and store them into your fat cells. Think of it like this. The more processed the more weight gain you will incur. Cutting processed foods from your diet is one of the best and quick healthy weight loss tips.

I’m just as confused as you gals when it comes to cell phone safety. First we hear that cell phones are linked to cancer and brain tumors, then we hear that it’s all a bunch of baloney, and then we’re told that cell phone radiation may actually be causing health problems. Until the official word comes in, a lot of people are talking about cell phone safety. Check out these smart tips for keeping yourself safe…

I was fascinated by these tips from SELF‘s interview with Devra Davis, Ph.D., author of the new book Disconnect: The Truth About Cell Phone Radiation, What the Industry Has Done to Hide It, and How to Protect Your Family, and founder of the Environmental Health Trust in Wyoming.
1. Keep your cell phone out of your sports bra: Ever wedged the phone between your girls? I have so done this on walks or jogs (guilty!). According to SELF: “Davis has been contacted by several doctors who have diagnosed breast cancer in women who tuck their cell into their ‘girls’ while they work out. Coincidence? Maybe. But the fact is that the closer the phone is to your body, the more radiation you’re being exposed to.”
2. Hold the phone away from your head: “According to Davis, most of us don’t read the fine print in our cell phone manuals, but they do recommend holding the phone away from our heads, rather than pressed up against our ears. The waves are one-quarter the strength at two inches and 50 times lower at three feet (hello, speakerphone!).”
3. Face it in the right (and healthiest) direction: “If you must carry your phone in your pocket, or anywhere else on your body, make sure the keypad is turned toward you, says Davis. By positioning the antenna this way, any electromagnetic fields are moving away from you rather than through you.”
For more cell phone safety tips, check out the article here.
Are you guilty of any of these cell-phone no-nos? Do you think much about cell phones and health?
P.S. Pregnant? Put down the cell phone, say researchers. And, the cool thing your phone can do for your workout (just keep it out of your bra!)…

Sometimes, there are days where you just don’t leave the house. It happens to all of us for any number of reasons—unbearable heat (um, hello summer, we thought you were on your way out?), a crazy snowstorm, waiting for a package in a delivery window that spans a billion hours—anything. Or, in my case, one very unlucky reason…
…foot surgery! Boo, right? I’ve been cooped up in my studio apartment since last Thursday, hobbling around with a cane and a bandaged-up foot. Here I am, a little bit bored (and, as you can see from my pantomime photos, a lotta bit nutty) from being indoors as summer slips away:

The Gods of Lazy Beauty sure start making noise when you’re in bed the majority of the day, which can kick your feel-good attitude to the curb. But, I’ve been following these rules to make sure I still feel like my pretty self, even if there’s a very-not-me surgical boot in the mix—and now I’m passing ‘em on to you gals.
1. The cardinal rule: Don’t skimp on deodorant.
OK, this seems like a total no-brainer, but think about it: You wake up, grab a quickie breakfast and crawl back under the sheets. Um, forget something? The #1 rule of feeling fresh and clean while stuck inside: Lift those underarms.
2. Get dressed.
Oh, how tempting it is to stay in your jammies all day when you know no one’s around! But don’t give in, ladies. I’m not saying throw on your silky party dress, but even if you just make a switch into a nicer tank or pop on a pair of clean bottoms, you’ll feel wonders more like yourself.
3. Do (and do and do) your hair.
Staying home = serious bedhead. While the style may be trending right now, that’s no excuse to not wash those locks. A quick rinse will wash away both dirt and that stale feeling. Plus, you’re in the p-e-r-f-e-c-t sitch to try out a style that you might be afraid to take out of the house normally! On Monday, I tried out a super-high bun—a style I swore I could never pull off—and guess what happened? I found my new favorite ponytail alternative.
4. Treat yourself to something smelly and lovely.
I feel prettiest when I know I smell dynamite-levels of delicious. Because washing up’s been quite the painful task for me lately, I treated myself to a fab fabbity fab (did I mention it’s fab?) bar of Fraiche’s natural cactus flower goat’s milk scented soap, and I feel—and smell—like a goddess when I emerge bathed.
5. Try a treatment.
When you’re stuck inside, you’ve got time on your hands for things you’re normally too rushed to do. Opt for a beauty treatment, like an all-over exfoliant, or try what I’ve been doing: a deep conditioning hair repair. If you need a suggestion, I’ve been loving Klorane’s Intense Nutrition Repair Mask with Mango Butter and Joico’s K-Pak Intense Hydrator Treatment for Dry Damaged Hair.
6. Take a bath.
And just relax.
7. Give yourself a mani (and try a new color!).
I think you nail fanatics (show of hands…er nails, please) will agree with me: You’ll feel way more polished if you glam-up your fingers and toes. If you have the supplies on-hand, go big and give yourself a complete DIY mani (here’s how!), or try a manicure-in-a-bottle polish like I did. I’m madly in love with Sally Hansen’s Complete Manicure line—two coats and bam! Nail loveliness in about a billion shades. Bonus: I dare you to try a new polish color you might not otherwise, like me:

This one’s Sally Hansen Complete Manicure in Pat on the Black—I’m usually a barely-there polish gal, but Lea Michele’s Emmy nail polish inspired me to try this ultra-deep plum, and I’m sold on the look.
8. Make your bed.
Okay, sure this one isn’t as fun as prettifying your lovely hair or nails, but I’m totally serious: How can you possibly feel fresh if your space is a mess? If you’re cooped up in your room (or studio apartment, le sigh), a clean space will make you feel way less scattered mentally, and, in turn, physically. Trust me on this, ladies!

MYTH: No minis on women over 35.
TRUTH: All it takes is a peek at Gwyneth Paltrow‘s legs in her Preen dress to dispel this fallacy. If you’ve got the gams, go for it! Just stick to understated silhouettes and, as super-stylist Rachel Zoe says, opt for “simple hair and makeup.”

MYTH: Save the sequins for after dark.
TRUTH: The shimmery fabric is eye-catching for day when layered with plain basics. Rachel Bilson dressed down a sparkling mini with an oxford shirt, both from designer Jenni Kayne. “I think sequins are my favorite fabric because they are glamorous, but I think they also work for day,” says Kayne. The designer recommends keeping “the silhouettes simple and easy.”

MYTH: Showing skin isn’t sophisticated.
TRUTH: On the right dress, a well-placed peekaboo is a sly surprise. Joy Bryant looked ladylike in a Matthew Williamson with a daring cutout at the waist and an otherwise conservative cut. Her best accessory? Plenty of confidence. “A dress shouldn’t own you. It shouldn’t overpower you,” Bryant has said. “You should own it.”

MYTH: Long dresses aren’t for short women.
TRUTH: Petites need not fear the maxidress trend—Eva Longoria, Jessica Simpson and Kristen Bell have all mastered the summery style. Just choose a dress in a light fabric, like Bell’s sheer silk gown from Jenni Kayne, to avoid adding bulk, and wear with comfortable, height-adding wedges.

MYTH: Avoid clashing colors.
TRUTH: An unexpected color combination can make a major statement. Savvy Reese Witherspoon paired a Rory Beca dress in hot pink and red with matching red sandals. A pared-down silhouette put the color combo—and Witherspoon—in the spotlight.

MYTH: Never wear denim with denim.
TRUTH: You can sport a jean jacket with jeans as long as you vary the wash of the two pieces. Rihanna gave a sophisticated twist to double denim, wearing skinny white jeans with a light-wash belted jacket.

MYTH: Don’t wear light shoes with dark stockings.
TRUTH: Black tights get extra chic when worn with a pair of eye-popping pumps. Sarah Jessica Parker gave her minidress a downtown spin with opaque tights and pale pink heels. Keep the Sex and the City star’s immaculate shoes in mind when picking your kicks—all eyes will be drawn downward so be wary of scuffs.

MYTH: Leather dresses are only for biker chicks.
TRUTH: You don’t have to be a Whitesnake fan to rock a leather frock. Sienna Miller looked downright demure in her Alexander McQueen dress paired with a vintage bolero. Just choose a knee-length dress or skirt and add a tailored jacket or shirt for an urbane twist.

MYTH: No white after Labor Day.
TRUTH: Don’t bother checking the calendar when you comb your closet. Diane Kruger wore a white Balmain minidress in the height of winter. Her secret? Seasonally appropriate close-toed shoes and a beaded dress with some heft.

MYTH: Belts and baby bumps don’t mix.
TRUTH: A waist-cincher can turn a tent-like frock into a flattering Empire-waist dress. During her high-style pregnancy, Alba belted a flowing Lanvin gown to show off her extra-feminine figure.

December 31st, 2010

“A bunch of my friends and I went to the rooftop bar of a hotel. About a half-hour before midnight, I ran down to my car because I had forgotten my camera. I figured I would have plenty of time to get back up there and find my friends. I grabbed my camera and got into an elevator all by myself. About halfway up, the elevator started shaking and stopped completely. I was trapped. A guy came on over the loudspeaker and told me there was an electrical short but he would have me out soon. A few minutes later, I could hear people outside counting down and celebrating. I didn’t get out until almost one in the morning. The worst part was, my friends hadn’t even missed me!” —Elena, 25
“Every year I throw a big dinner party on December 31st. I was really excited last year because I had been dating a guy for a few months and was glad to have someone to kiss when the ball dropped. We hadn’t talked much between Christmas and New Year’s Eve, but I figured he was busy with the holidays. I cooked all day and made a great meal. My guy showed up late and the party was in full swing. When everyone sat down for dinner we went around the table and said what we hoped for next year. I said I wanted to take more trips with my boyfriend. Then it was his turn. He sat there silently for a minute. Then he muttered that he couldn’t date me anymore and got up and left. I was devastated. He hadn’t given me any clues that he was unhappy. I spent the rest of the night crying in my room.” —Vanessa, 29
“My boyfriend, Jim, and I usually stay in for New Year’s, but a few years back we decided to go to a big club. It cost a lot of money to buy tickets, but we figured it was a nice treat. We drank fancy cocktails, danced, and were having a blast. Then, while Jim was in the bathroom, this creepy guy started trying to grind on me. I told him to back off, but he was really aggressive. When Jim came back, he saw what was going on and told the guy to step back. The guy was a freak and started screaming, and then he stormed off. A few minutes later a bouncer came up to us and told us we were being kicked out. The creep had lied and said Jim had pushed him and acted crazy. We tried to explain the real situation, but no one would listen. We were forced to leave without a refund, and rang in the holiday by walking home to my apartment.” —Jessica, 31
“I live with my sister and she went out of town over New Year’s. I had been dying to borrow this new silver silk dress she’d recently bought, but she wouldn’t lend it to me. She hadn’t worn it yet, and had spent a ton of money on it. I decided to sneak the dress out of her closet to wear to a party. I figured I would just be careful and she would never know. I got so many compliments on the dress and had a great time. I was careful to only drink clear liquids, so there’d be no chance of staining it. At midnight the party went crazy, everyone was hugging and cheering. One guy came up to kiss my cheek and accidentally tripped. His cranberry drink went flying down the whole front of the dress. I immediately ran to the sink to wash it off, but it wouldn’t come out. I spent the rest of the night stressing out telling my sis. I ended up calling her to confess and she really let me have it.” —Ann, 23
“I have been together with my boyfriend, Eric, for several years. One of his female friends has always bothered me, and I can tell she has feelings for him. What’s worse is that she’s a total bitch to me. Anyway, on New Year’s Eve, we went to a friend’s house and she was there. She kept trying to take Eric’s attention away from me, but I just ignored her. Throughout the night she got progressively more drunk. Right at midnight, Eric turned to kiss me and she slid in between us and tried to make out with him. Her nerve shocked me. Eric immediately pushed her away, and she just smiled at me. The mental image of them kissing was not how I wanted to start my new year. The rest of the night she went around telling people what good lips he had. Eric literally had to restrain me from slapping her!” —Karen, 21

December 28th, 2010

On February 6, Fox will reward its hit show, Glee, with the best lead-in of the year: The Superbowl. And Glee isn’t about to miss an opportunity to shine for that extra, added gaggle of viewers. Entertainment Weekly has reported that the post-Superbowl episode is not only supersized, but also the most Glee expensive episode to date. (And maybe even the priciest of any TV show.)
What will viewers get for the money? The regular episode (i.e. not a specific tribute to one artist) will feature its own, high school football game. During that game’s half-time, there will be a performance mash-up of Michael Jackson‘s “Thriller” and another, as-yet-unnamed song. The end product isn’t what you’d expect. “It’s definitely Glee-ified,” Lea Michele told Broadwayworld.com.
Since Black Eyed Peas is the actual Superbowl’s halftime entertainment, it’s only natural that the Glee kids would take on one of their songs. Gleeks can also watch for covers of Lady Antebellum and Katy Perry. (Ten bucks says the Perry song will be “Hot N Cold,” since they did “Teenage Dream” last month.)
As for guest stars, Gwyneth Paltrow‘s kooky substitute teacher (last seen on the November 16th episode) will return, and (much more randomly) Katie Couric will also cameo.
Will Couric sing? If so, I hope she’s got pipes. Lots of people are going to be watching!
