All The Style Tips You Will Ever Need!

Pick the Right Fabric

The two most important qualities to look for in fabric are weight and movement. If a fabric is too stiff, it can look boxy; too thin, and it may cling to every bulge. Wool crepe, wool microfiber blends, cotton or wool gabardine and cotton blended with silk are generally good choices.

Work with Proportion

Your clothes may fit properly, but if you don’t get the proportions right, you’ll still be off the mark. Choose looks that are either “short over long” or “long over short.” Think: a cropped jacket over a knee-length shift, or a long jacket with skinny pants, or a tunic over a shorter pencil skirt.

Invest in Quality Fabric

The adage “You get what you pay for” is gospel with fabric. Cheap fabrics tend to be less flattering, while higher-quality fabrics look better, last longer and hold their shape

Avoid Excessive Details

Too many can create a questionable overall look, date your clothes, minimize and outfit’s versatility and make your look heavier.

Confidence Is Key

Some of the most attractive people in the word are not always the most fashionably dressed, yet they radiate a self-assurance that gets them noticed. While you can quickly lose your poise if you’re not comfortable in what you’re wearing, the right clothes can lend you some of your attitude. The rest has to come from within.

Create a Signature Look

You can create a signature look that is bold or subtle, such as always wearing something lavender or a favorite stack of bangles. Repetition isn’t boring—it is the mark of a confident woman who knows what she likes and what suits her best.

Choose the Right Shade

Everyone can wear every color—it all comes down to finding the right shade of that color for you. The shades that suit you depend on your skin tone as well as the color of your hair and eyes. Don’t go overboard—stick to a maximum of three colors in any given outfit. Any more and the colors lose their punch.

Play Up Basics

A plain T-shirt lets an ornate skirt or jacket take center stage. If you choose a colored shirt, be sure to keep other pieces in complementary hues or neutrals.

Try a Trouser

The most sophisticated way to wear jeans to work is to pick a trouser cut in a dark rinse. Wear them with a jacket, a refined top or sweater, and heels or flats.

Wear Color Wisely

The best way to wear a colorful pair of jeans is to make them the standout piece in your ensemble. The rest of the outfit should be neutral and simple.

Keep Styles Simple for Maximum Versatility

Jeans can quickly go from day to night if you choose a style with clean lines and minimal details. Pair sexy, white skinny jeans with a feminine top that has some panache. Dressy heels with also ratchet up the wow factor.

Dress Up Pants

When it comes to dressing up a pair of pants, simpler shapes are often better. Sleek black pants or a pair with tuxedo stripes are evening-worthy options that can be worn in countless ways. Add shimmer and femininity with metallic, beaded or ruffled tops.

Try an Evening Coat

Choose an evening coat as you would a gown: You want one rich in detail and cut from luxe material so you feel gorgeous every time you slip it on.

Invest in a Chic Bag

Classic hangbags are worth their hefty price tags because you can carry them for years. You want your basic shades, but also try one in a bright color; if well crafted, a bag is ageless, timeless and fun.

Have Fun with Eyewear

Don’t worry about being practical or classic when it comes to sunglasses, because a quick way to update any look is to slip on the latest shades.

Get a Great Haircut

A great haircut is crucial; your hair is your constant accessory. Yes, good cuts can be expensive, but what they add to your overall appearance makes them worth every penny.

Build a Core Wardrobe

If you’re in your 20s and 30s, build a simple core wardrobe but also experiment and play with inexpensive, trend-driven items.

Invest in Quality Pieces

In your 40s and beyond, establish a lasting wardrobe of the best basics, investing in the highest quality you can afford. Play with your accessories, but also start to collect some real jewelry as well.

Find a Bra That Fits

A bra that fits you well will work harder than anything else in your wardrobe. Seek out a bra-fit expert at a lingerie boutique or department store for expert help in determining your exact size and which styles best fit your shape.

Add Seamless Styles to Your Repertoire

Seamless bras with some lining are great for formfitting T-shirts and other clingy tops, because their extra layers can enhance your bust, smooth out your curves, and keep your nipples from showing through. To make your seamless bras and panties as invisible as possible, choose a shade that matches your skin tone. One common mistake: white under white, which invariably shows through.

Embrace Shapewear

Everyday bras and panties are an obvious must, but you also need a core group of problem-solving pieces, such as seamless underwear and other shape wear. They’re your wardrobe’s secret weapons, the unseen times that let you pull on your slinky or low-cut dresses with total confidence. Of course, you deserve to own a few fun “little nothings” as well, perhaps to wear with little (or nothing) else.

8 Ways To Prettify Yourself (When You’re Stuck Inside, At Home)

Monday, January 3rd, 2011

Sometimes, there are days where you just don’t leave the house. It happens to all of us for any number of reasons—unbearable heat (um, hello summer, we thought you were on your way out?), a crazy snowstorm, waiting for a package in a delivery window that spans a billion hours—anything. Or, in my case, one very unlucky reason…

…foot surgery! Boo, right? I’ve been cooped up in my studio apartment since last Thursday, hobbling around with a cane and a bandaged-up foot. Here I am, a little bit bored (and, as you can see from my pantomime photos, a lotta bit nutty) from being indoors as summer slips away:

The Gods of Lazy Beauty sure start making noise when you’re in bed the majority of the day, which can kick your feel-good attitude to the curb. But, I’ve been following these rules to make sure I still feel like my pretty self, even if there’s a very-not-me surgical boot in the mix—and now I’m passing ‘em on to you gals.

1. The cardinal rule: Don’t skimp on deodorant.
OK, this seems like a total no-brainer, but think about it: You wake up, grab a quickie breakfast and crawl back under the sheets. Um, forget something? The #1 rule of feeling fresh and clean while stuck inside: Lift those underarms.

2. Get dressed.
Oh, how tempting it is to stay in your jammies all day when you know no one’s around! But don’t give in, ladies. I’m not saying throw on your silky party dress, but even if you just make a switch into a nicer tank or pop on a pair of clean bottoms, you’ll feel wonders more like yourself.

3. Do (and do and do) your hair.
Staying home = serious bedhead. While the style may be trending right now, that’s no excuse to not wash those locks. A quick rinse will wash away both dirt and that stale feeling. Plus, you’re in the p-e-r-f-e-c-t sitch to try out a style that you might be afraid to take out of the house normally! On Monday, I tried out a super-high bun—a style I swore I could never pull off—and guess what happened? I found my new favorite ponytail alternative.

4. Treat yourself to something smelly and lovely.
I feel prettiest when I know I smell dynamite-levels of delicious. Because washing up’s been quite the painful task for me lately, I treated myself to a fab fabbity fab (did I mention it’s fab?) bar of Fraiche’s natural cactus flower goat’s milk scented soap, and I feel—and smell—like a goddess when I emerge bathed.

5. Try a treatment.
When you’re stuck inside, you’ve got time on your hands for things you’re normally too rushed to do. Opt for a beauty treatment, like an all-over exfoliant, or try what I’ve been doing: a deep conditioning hair repair. If you need a suggestion, I’ve been loving Klorane’s Intense Nutrition Repair Mask with Mango Butter and Joico’s K-Pak Intense Hydrator Treatment for Dry Damaged Hair.

6. Take a bath.
And just relax.

7. Give yourself a mani (and try a new color!).
I think you nail fanatics (show of hands…er nails, please) will agree with me: You’ll feel way more polished if you glam-up your fingers and toes. If you have the supplies on-hand, go big and give yourself a complete DIY mani (here’s how!), or try a manicure-in-a-bottle polish like I did. I’m madly in love with Sally Hansen’s Complete Manicure line—two coats and bam! Nail loveliness in about a billion shades. Bonus: I dare you to try a new polish color you might not otherwise, like me:

This one’s Sally Hansen Complete Manicure in Pat on the Black—I’m usually a barely-there polish gal, but Lea Michele’s Emmy nail polish inspired me to try this ultra-deep plum, and I’m sold on the look.

8. Make your bed.
Okay, sure this one isn’t as fun as prettifying your lovely hair or nails, but I’m totally serious: How can you possibly feel fresh if your space is a mess? If you’re cooped up in your room (or studio apartment, le sigh), a clean space will make you feel way less scattered mentally, and, in turn, physically. Trust me on this, ladies!

Fashion Myths Busted

Saturday, January 1st, 2011

MYTH: No minis on women over 35.

TRUTH: All it takes is a peek at Gwyneth Paltrow‘s legs in her Preen dress to dispel this fallacy. If you’ve got the gams, go for it! Just stick to understated silhouettes and, as super-stylist Rachel Zoe says, opt for “simple hair and makeup.”

MYTH: Save the sequins for after dark.

TRUTH: The shimmery fabric is eye-catching for day when layered with plain basics. Rachel Bilson dressed down a sparkling mini with an oxford shirt, both from designer Jenni Kayne. “I think sequins are my favorite fabric because they are glamorous, but I think they also work for day,” says Kayne. The designer recommends keeping “the silhouettes simple and easy.”

MYTH: Showing skin isn’t sophisticated.

TRUTH: On the right dress, a well-placed peekaboo is a sly surprise. Joy Bryant looked ladylike in a Matthew Williamson with a daring cutout at the waist and an otherwise conservative cut. Her best accessory? Plenty of confidence. “A dress shouldn’t own you. It shouldn’t overpower you,” Bryant has said. “You should own it.”

MYTH: Long dresses aren’t for short women.

TRUTH: Petites need not fear the maxidress trend—Eva Longoria, Jessica Simpson and Kristen Bell have all mastered the summery style. Just choose a dress in a light fabric, like Bell’s sheer silk gown from Jenni Kayne, to avoid adding bulk, and wear with comfortable, height-adding wedges.

MYTH: Avoid clashing colors.

TRUTH: An unexpected color combination can make a major statement. Savvy Reese Witherspoon paired a Rory Beca dress in hot pink and red with matching red sandals. A pared-down silhouette put the color combo—and Witherspoon—in the spotlight.

MYTH: Never wear denim with denim.

TRUTH: You can sport a jean jacket with jeans as long as you vary the wash of the two pieces. Rihanna gave a sophisticated twist to double denim, wearing skinny white jeans with a light-wash belted jacket.

MYTH: Don’t wear light shoes with dark stockings.

TRUTH: Black tights get extra chic when worn with a pair of eye-popping pumps. Sarah Jessica Parker gave her minidress a downtown spin with opaque tights and pale pink heels. Keep the Sex and the City star’s immaculate shoes in mind when picking your kicks—all eyes will be drawn downward so be wary of scuffs.

MYTH: Leather dresses are only for biker chicks.

TRUTH: You don’t have to be a Whitesnake fan to rock a leather frock. Sienna Miller looked downright demure in her Alexander McQueen dress paired with a vintage bolero. Just choose a knee-length dress or skirt and add a tailored jacket or shirt for an urbane twist.

MYTH: No white after Labor Day.

TRUTH: Don’t bother checking the calendar when you comb your closet. Diane Kruger wore a white Balmain minidress in the height of winter. Her secret? Seasonally appropriate close-toed shoes and a beaded dress with some heft.

MYTH: Belts and baby bumps don’t mix.

TRUTH: A waist-cincher can turn a tent-like frock into a flattering Empire-waist dress. During her high-style pregnancy, Alba belted a flowing Lanvin gown to show off her extra-feminine figure.

2011 Beauty Trends Guide

21 Days of Trendy Makeup

Wednesday, December 22nd, 2010

Day 1

A big presentation at work calls for understated sophistication. My favorite lip stain adds polish to my basics—a hint of blush and mascara—but doesn’t steal the show.

Time: 10 seconds*
Tools: Bobbi Brown Tinted Lip Balm in Pink Raspberry

* Mascara, foundation, and concealer application time not included.

Day 2

Some looks are best left to the pros. My attempt at glossy lids (so gorgeous in magazines!) smeared my mascara in seconds.

Time: 30 seconds
Tools: Aquaphor Healing Ointment

Day 3

Bold brows have been a runway mainstay the past few seasons, but I can hardly find the courage to show my roommate, let alone leave the house.

Time: 4 minutes
Tools: M.A.C Impeccable Brow Pencil in Black

Day 4

Tired of the same-old, same-old black smoky eye? Me too. As an alternative, I swap in gold and copper metallics instead. Focusing the pigment on the eyelid and away from the brow bone keeps the look subtle.

Time: 7 minutes
Tools: Urban Decay eye shadow in Half Baked and Smog

Day 5

No foray into makeup experimentation would be complete without red lipstick. I choose an orange-based glossy shade and skip lipliner for a softer look. Surprisingly, no grocery-store stares. Are power lips less shocking than I thought?

Time: 1 minute
Tools: NYX Luscious Lip Palette in Red Rediscovered

Day 6

A beauty mirage, dewy skin is hard to achieve naturally, but, thankfully, easy to fake. I apply a cream highlighter on the top of my cheekbones, brow bone, and bridge of my nose. Voilà!

Time: 2 minutes
Tools: Nars The Multiple in Copacabana

Day 7

I love the deep purple lids makeup artist Charlotte Tilbury layered on at Victoria Beckham’s spring show, so I give it an enthusiastic try, dusting the shadow up to the brow bone. I’m hooked!

Time: 4 minutes
Tools: Lancôme Color Design Sensational Effects Eye Shadow Smooth Hold in Trendy

 Day 8

Big blush, applied on the apples of cheeks and the temples, was a hit at shows like Christian Siriano. Inspired, I blend in a cream formula, and love the bright pop of color. White eyeliner finishes the fresh look.

Time: 45 seconds
Tools: Maybelline New York Dream Mousse Blush in Pink Frosting; CoverGirl LashBlast Length Mascara in Very Black

Day 9

Dark lips, a major fall trend, scare me, so I try a slightly more ladylike cabernet. Don’t forget to use a lip brush for application—bold hues require a precise line.

Time: 1 minute
Tools: Make Up For Ever Rouge Artist Intense in Satin Blackcurrant

Day 10

I try the (surprisingly flattering!) orange lipstick trend, à la Marc by Marc Jacobs, balancing the extreme color with bare skin.

Time: 1 minute
Tools: Kanebo Sensai Lasting Treatment Rouge in Soubi

Day 11

To make the glittery disco eyes spotted at Giles more wearable, I opt for one color—turquoise—focused only on the lid. The result is glamorous, perfect for date night. Tip: Use a cream shadow as a base and apply the glitter with a damp shadow brush to help it stick to the skin.

Time: 10 minutes
Tools: Paint Pot in Constructivist, Pro Glitter in Turquoise, Pro Mixing Medium Water Base, all
by M.A.C

Day 12

A late night out leaves me with droopy, tired eyes. To brighten up, I line my lower lid with white liner and the top with navy. The uplifting effects are instant. Darker skin tones can try light beige or gold instead of white for the same results.

Time: 2 minutes
Tools: Revlon Luxurious Color Kohl Eyeliner in Pure White, Stila Smudge Stick Waterproof Eye Liner in Blue Ribbon

Day 13

Pink lipstick yields compliments galore! Perhaps my favorite look so far. If you’re blond, try paler hues, redheads look best in peachy pinks, and brunettes, like me, can play with fuchsia shades.

Time: 30 seconds
Tools: Benefit Ultra Shines Lip Shine in Wild Child

Day 14

Cat eyes convey instant retro glamour, but judging from my friends’ reactions (“Are you serious?” was the most common response), my version might work best for a masquerade party.Time: 10 minutes
Tools: Single Eyeshadow in Night Fever, Duo Eyeshadow in Pandora, Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Belle de Jour, all by Nars

Day 15

Fascinated by the vibrant makeup of Bollywood films, I try my own rainbow lids, anchoring the look with orange shadow. My girlfriends are wowed, but my guy friends don’t seem to notice—shocker.Time: 10 minutes
Tools: Yaby eye shadows in Just Orange, Total Alien, Funky Plum, and Carbon Paper

Day 16

My daily routine isn’t complete without two coats of mascara, but special occasions like a friend’s birthday call for fake lashes. I apply a dramatic pair along the upper lid and a natural-looking pair along the lower (I cut them to fit) for instant doll eyes.Time: 15 minutes
Tools: Ardell Fashion Lashes in Black and Lower Black

Day 17

From Nina Ricci to Alexander Wang, red eye shadow has experienced a surprising burst in popularity. Avoid looking like you have allergies by going heavy on black eyeliner and mascara.Time: 12 minutes
Tools: M.A.C eye shadow in Coppering and Cranberry; Milani Eye Tech Liquid Liner

Day 18

Bright eyeliner is a stroke of genius: minimum effort with maximum impact. The green shade (applied with a liner brush) gets major attention at a party. Tip: For easy application, tilt your head back slightly while drawing the line.Time: 1 minute
Tools: Borghese Polychromatic Shadow in Sensual Sage

Day 19

A last-minute dinner invite leaves no time to run home and freshen up. Luckily, mega eyeliner smudged out for a sultry nighttime vibe transforms my face in seconds—and earns more bad pickup lines than just my usual mascara. To avoid raccoon eyes later, I run a Q-tip over the inner lash lines to absorb excess moisture.

Time: 1 minute
Tools: L’Oréal Paris Studio Secrets Kohl Eyeliner in Black Kohl

Day 20

A version of hard-to-wear two-tone lips: Try a highlighting gloss in the center of your favorite lip color.

Time: 3 minutes
Tools: e.l.f. Hypershine Gloss in Vixen and Honey

Day 21

I attempt to re-create the blue smoky eye that makeup artist Tom Pecheux created at fall’s Derek Lam show. One word: obsessed.

Time: 8 minutes
Tools: Estée Lauder Pure Color Eyeshadow in Nocturnal Blue

Conceal and Reveal Strategies

Monday, December 20th, 2010

Neck

Conceal: Audrey Hepburn was admired for her lovely long neck, but if you feel that yours is a little too long, there are ways to conceal it by wearing high crew-neck tops or turtlenecks.

Reveal: If you want the opposite effect, wearing V-necks and wide U-necks will elongate the appearance of your neck by drawing the eye down toward the décolletage.

Shoulders

Conceal: If you want to appear narrower in the shoulders, wear dark colors on top. Raglan sleeves on shirts also make your shoulders seem slimmer by drawing your eye inward. Avoid wearing anything boxy since this adds weight and does not draw the eye to a defined waist.

Reveal: Wide lapels or epaulets on your jackets will widen the look of your shoulders. Also, wearing anything with strong shoulders and a nipped waist will accentuate your shoulders.

Back

Conceal: Dark, well-fitted jackets will de-emphasize a wider back. Also, wearing a princess-seam blazer will give the illusion of a smaller back. The same strategy for concealing shoulders applies: Avoid wearing boxy jackets.

Reveal: Halter tops and dresses or anything with a plunging back will show off this sexy asset.

Bust

Conceal: Semi-fitted styles, darted tops, V-necks, sweetheart cuts and single-breasted jackets will help a big bust look best. Steer clear of high crew necks and turtlenecks with horizontal patterns, which can create a “uniboob” and make your torso look thick.

Reveal: Ruffles and ruching will add texture to a top and give you a more voluptuous appearance. Horizontal and empire-waist cuts will also make a small bust look best.

Waistline

Conceal: Tailored cuts that taper in snugly at the waist, such as jackets with princess seams or peplum jackets, will create the illusion of a waist.

Reveal: Wrap dresses and tops that tie at the waist or belts that cinch at the waist will show off your slim middle.

Stomach

Conceal: Empire-waist shirts and dresses help disguise a bulging stomach. Wearing dark colors at the waist is beneficial in concealing a problem stomach area. Layering a fitted piece under a jacket will also be helpful. A wrap top or wrap dress is also a great option to conceal the stomach area and create a waist.

Reveal: Fitted tops and sweaters in a lightweight fabric fit snugly (not clingy) and show off a sexy stomach.

Butt

Conceal: Curve-skimming dresses in matte jersey will diminish the appearance of a full bottom. Skirts that release at the upper hip, such as an A-line skirt, are your best option. Pants with a wide leg or boot cut will balance out a big booty.

Reveal:
Pants or jeans with interesting back pockets show off your natural curves. Skirts and pants should be form-fitting, such as a pencil skirt and skinny jeans.

Hips

Conceal: Jackets that are tailored to hit at your waist and have wide shoulders will balance large hips. As with concealing your butt, wearing A-line skirts and dresses is your best option. Avoid wearing cargo pants or pants with large side pockets, as this will add bulk to your problem area.

Reveal: Pants with side pockets or pocket detailing add curves to straight hips. A trumpet skirt will flatter by fitting snuggly through the hips then flaring out at the knee.

Thighs

Conceal: Boot-cut or flared-leg pants counter the width of your thighs and balance your legs. Avoid skirts with an asymmetrical hem, as this will draw attention to your thighs, whereas an A-line skirt will disguise full thighs.

Reveal: Skinny jeans, short shorts and short skirts reveal your shapely thighs.

Calves

Conceal: Avoid skirts and pants that hit at mid-calf length, which will make your calves look wider. Wearing shoes with ankle straps is also unflattering to wide-calves because it cuts of the vertical line.

Reveal: A-line skirts that hit at knee-length make calves look slimmer, and high heels make your calves shapelier.

Feet

Conceal: To conceal big feet, try a round-toe or square-toe cut.

Reveal: A low-cut, high-heeled show will visually lengthen the look of your feet.

Do or Don’t: The Crushed Velvet Trend

Wednesday, December 8th, 2010

It’s not my fault, I swear, but every time I hear “crushed velvet” I think of leotards. I was a figure skater growing up (in South Florida…what gives) and ever since then, I’ve wanted nothing to do with the fabric when off the ice. But lately I’ve been seeing it worked into outfits that look more chic than costumey— and now, I’m just confused. Should I give crushed velvet a spin somewhere other than the skating rink? Ladies of STF, please weigh in!

This sort of all started with Chanel Iman. Despite what I thought was a natural aversion to the fabric, I love her jacket! But since I can’t really pull off the full bohemian look like she can, I’d probably go sans headdress and pair it with dark jeans instead of a long skirt.

And then there’s Chanel’s fellow supermodel Jessica Hart, who made this eggplant mini dress look relaxed, totally effortless, and dare I say it, chic.

To me, they look great, and surprisingly not like figure skaters (or gymnasts, I know you hear me, too!). But, sigh, it doesn’t mean that crushed velvet can’t still go wrong. For instance this dress of Scarlett Johansson’s could use a few more inches at the hem and the color could be dialed down from bright blue to a cool, dusty grey, don’t you think?
